THE SNOW IN MY COUNTRY LEBANON.

I have a special place like everyone in the world.
My special place is where I spent my childhood. It is a very special place where I had my
family my brothers, my sisters and my grand-mother.

My hometown was in between four mountains very high from the beach but near the sun
because the sun rose early in the morning from behind the mountain in summer.

We had snow in winter and the snow used to cover the mountain and it covert the roads.
We had a good time when exclude not go to school because of the snow.

In spring the flowers start to open and the green start to show like a bride walking in a
big garden. At the front of our house we had lots of trees and three kinds of grape vines
and each vine was a different cooler and different flavor.

I used to climb on them or to be more specific I used to climb on the wire frame for the
grapes and I used to be in trouble with my mum. The cherry tree that we had was very big
and I enjoyed eating the green cherries and my auntie used to get very mad.

My grand-parents house was always closed in winter but in summer my grand-mother
came to the village to make the jams and all kinds of food that she used to prepare for
winter time. She used to come with lots of sweets and cakes and best of all the fresh bread
that you could smell from faraway.

I used to enjoy my grand-mother's company and I always listened to her and did what she
told me. I was the first grand-child for her and she used to spoil me and she used to make
me the food that "I" liked the most.

I was very cheeky and my hometown is a very special place for me. It was like a part of
my heart and I hope that one day I can take my children and show them where I was
brought up and all the trees that I climbed which got me in trouble.

MY BACK-ROUND.

My name is Djimi Bou Abboud and I come from Lebanon.
I have been in Australiafor about nine years. What languages are spoken in your own communities?
The laguages that are spoken in my community, here in Australia, are Arabic, English, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese .
2. Is the official language of your country the same as your mother tongue?
Yes, in Lebanon-where I come from-it is, I speak Arabic and that is the oficial language. But here in Australia it isn't. The official language is English.
3. What are the reasons for this?
Australia was funded by the English as a convict colony.
4. What language and culture best represents you?
Now I have two languages and two cultures because I'm living in Australia for these reasons
both of them represent me.
5. Are there any languages you are averse to?
The Turkish language.
7. Can you explain why?
I found it very heavy on my ear.
8. Do you have a public and a private identity?
No, crazy people stay the same. NO, seriously, I'm comfortable the way I am, I don't need tow personas.
9.Do you think foreign language learning should be fostered? Why?
I think language should be fostered so people can undertand each other.
10. What is the foreign language policy and practice in your country?
I don't know if there are any policies but I know that schools have started to teach different languages.
11.What choice of foreign languages do you have at secondary school?
In Lebanon I didn't have any choice, if you are in a public school you have to learn Arabic and French. If you are in a private shool you'll learn Arabic English and French.
Here in Australia there are many options, Chinese, Japanese, French, German, Spanish, Arabic, Greek, Italian, Servbian, etc.
12.What is the attitude of people towards learning a foreign language in your country?
The people in my country like to learn different languages and it's very normal for people to
know a second language.
13. Does speaking a foreign language give you a better status?
Yes, it does because I need to know different languages to reach my goals.
14. Are there languages which are more privileged and others that are looked down upon?
Yes, there are languages that are looked down upon, like African languages, and some that are privileged, like English and French.

15.What is the perception of foreign languages/cultures in the country you are now living in as
compared to your own?
Some people complain if you are not talking English but most people accept it. I've heard bad comments when I was talking to my kids in Arabic. I think that is racist, but I switch to English because I think it is easier for my kids.
.
16.What were the main challenges and discoveries when trying to adapt to a new language and
culture?
The language, the way of living and the food. I have found many new things since I moved to this country.
17. Do you think you that your studies prepared you for it?
Yes, they did. I learnt French but it helped me a lot to learn English. Once you have learnt a language it is easier to learn a second one.But the communication with others prepares me more, I think.
18. How would you define intercultural competence and how do you think it can be developed?
The intercultural competence is very hard but if you live in the country for a bit of time you
will develope the way of living.
19.Is it possible to create an identity in a foreign language? Can you be yourself in English for instance? Is it possible to create an identity in a foreign language?
I like living in Australia because you can have friends from different cultures and different
languages, in my country I only had Arabic friends from the same culture and the same
language. I think I'm the same in English and in Arabic because I have been here for a long time.

Me And My Kids.

Me And My Friends

Alex catching the Marlin

1. I like listening to music all the time but most of the time I listen to music when I'm driving, if I don't listen to it I feel that the day is not complete.

My Opinion About Emile's Trip

Write your opinion about Emile’s podcast and slide show. Maybe the first country that I would visit is France.

My Opinion Of:Two Of Us

In my opinion the story of Two Of Us is very unusual story and it's
very hard to find in our days.

For someone who owns a grocery shop and a cafe to help children
with their school work after the shop being closed is very good. I think Bilel is lucky
to have someone like Geoffery Lee in his life. If Bilel had stayed at home doing
nothing he wouldn't be a doctor, especially as he was from a big family.

I think Mr. Lee was like a father to Bilel. Because of that Bilel of that
Bilel studied very hard and he wanted to proove to Mr. Lee that he can do what
he can to be a doctor. I think Mr. Lee is a very good man to help someone who
doesn't know much about him or from a different culture.

I liked the story, it's a very nice story and it makes you think and
hope that if you or your children needed someone in their life they will find someone
like Mr. Lee to be next to you or your children side by side.

Cars Insurance

In Australia there are three different kinds of car insurance. Third party, third party property and comprehensive.
Most people use the CTP or Third party insurance because people think that's the best cover and it's compoulsory. Some people think if they can get the cover for the other car maybe it's better.
The insurance fees are different because it depends on the age of the person. If it's male under 21 yeras of age, he pays lots of money. From 21 years and up the fees get down they don't pay lots of money. You'll start on level 6 or level 5 and after it depends on your driving and the number og accidents. If you don't have an accident in one year you will go up a level. The fees are different between a lady who's 30 years of age and a male who is 20 years of age.
The comprehensive is a cover you can have, it's the most expensive insurance. It covers damage you cause to someone else's car or damage you cause to yuor own car. Some people get this cover because they think they car is very expensive or for more safety.
The Third party is the non-compulsory. You can have this cover for the damage that you cause to someone else's car. Some people think it's good cover because their own car doesn't have a good value. The insurance pays the costs of the repair, that's why some people think it's a good solution because cars repair can be very expensive if you had an accident with a Porch or Jaguar it would cost tens of thoursands of dollars.
We are lucky that in Australia we've got lots of kinds of car insurance. Everyone can get the cover thatis suitable for them.

AUSTRALIA

stralia falls on the South of the Equator. The total area of Australia is
7,686,850km2.The population of Australia is about 20 million people. In Sydney is the largest population it has 3.9 million people. There are no right and wrong points
along the spectrum- it's a journey of change. For many of us in Australia,
coming here has been like an exchange, only that it's not a temporary
journey, but a more permanent one. There are different stages of change
when we get to know another culture. The last ones are ones of
acceptance, adaptation and integration. We no longer believe that our
own culture is the only one, or the best one. We are no longer
ethnocentric in our view of the world around us. We understand and
recognise that there are many different values and behaviours. We can
finally start looking at things from different cultural perspectives. We
can discuss this in our forum this week.
posted by Rosa at 10:49 PM

0 Comments:
Post a Comment <<>
About
Audio snaphots of our multicultural city.
How to Subscribe
Podcast Feed To subscribe to the podcast, right click on the link above, select "Copy Shortcut" in Windows or "Copy Link Location" in Firefox, then paste the link into podcatching software like iPodder or iTunes.
About Me

Name:Rosa
Location:Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
View my complete profile href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/2.5/" rel="license">This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 2.5 License.

-->

Cedar

Cedar is the Icon of my country. Cedar is found in the old
world from the Mediterranean to the Himalayas. That is why Cedar is in
Lebanon, because Lebanon is an old country and it is in the Mediterranean.
Cedar is a tree that is well known as an evergre en tree all through the
year.Cedar has been the Icon of Lebanon for many centuries and since
1948 when Lebanon had its liberty the Cedar tree has been in the middle
of the flag.
In Lebanon we've got an area where people look after the Cedar
trees and in this special area there are lots of people who go there to see
the trees of good. The Cedar of Lebanon has been mentioned in the bible
and the wood has been used to build the Temple and the house of Solomon
(1 King 5, 6 and 7).
Cedar is a beautiful tree with a beautiful smell.Maybe that's why the
people came to Lebanon to see it and to take its wood or to do business in
Lebanon. The first letters were written on a piece of Cedar.
The old people used to say if someone is sick go and smell the tree of Good
or take some of the leaves and boil them and drink them. Cedar is a native of
Lebanon and the tree are as old as Lebanon.

EAGLE

The Eagle is a big bird. There are many different types of Eagle.

The Wingspread Eagle is up to 7 1/2 ft /228cm.Their beaks are as long as
their heads. The population is about 3,000,000.
Lebanon is in the south west of Asia on the Mediterranean Sea. The capital is Beirut. The country faces the Eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea and is bordered on the North and East by Syria and on the South by Isarel.
Lebanon is a very old country. It's very small but very historic. The Romans were in Lebanon for a long time and left some beautiful Roman buildings in Baalbek.

Some other areas are very well known, like Jeta. It's a cave that has been made by nature. El-Rawsheh is a very popular area and there are lots of restaurants from all around the world and many interesting shops.

Jbeil is another historic area built by the Romans too. The French were in Lebanon and they gave us the French language and they've been looking after Jeta (cave).

Saida and Sour have been called the twins of Lebanon for a long time .They are neighbouoring ports and the Greek left some of their buildings and words there.

We've also got Bait-Eddin, which is a beautiful old palace. It's so beautiful with the old waterfall and the stones, the huge bedrooms and the huge area in the middle of the palace.

The most beautiful Museum is Kasser Moussa. If you go inside, you stay inside because of the wax works and famous people have been made from wax.

The snow restorts in winter are Faray a and Ures, where people go skiing and have a good time. The white snow that covers the mountains and the trees of Lebanon has been named Swessra of the Mediterranean.

The best part is you can enjoy the snow and the beach in the same seson. The snow takes a long time to melt. Beach and mountain are close to each other. That's why you can be at the top of the mountain and right after you can go for a swim.

You can do lots of shopping and get designer clothes because there are well known
designers in Lebanon.

Clubs, cinemas, theatres, concerts are lots of fun and life is safe because people are very friendly and they welcome every one. Most Lebanese are well educated and they speak more than two or three languages.

MIRELLA'S TRIP

1. If the mum liked the girl she would tell her husband and they would ask about the girl's family.
They would go to the girl family and the boy's parents would ask the girl's parents if their kids could meet to see if they liked each other. If the girl and the boy liked each other after one time of meeting they would get married.
In today's marriages, parents still get involved if the girl is young or under twenty. If the girl is above twenty she can meet someone, but in both situations the parents ask about each other to make sure the kids made the right decision.
I think today's marriages are better than before because deicding by themselves gives the opportunity for the couple to take responsibility for their choice.

Sweets haish-elsaraya

Ingredients

2 litres of milk.

5 table spoons of cornflour.

1/600g thickened cream.

12 table spoons of sugar.

slice bread browned in the toaster.

300g blended pistachio.

Syrup

1 cup of sugar.

2 cups of water.

1 tea spoon of rose water.

1 table spoon of lemon.

Method

You make the syrup first. Stir the mix until it starts to boil. Lower the flame and stir very quickly so it doesn't stick.

Spread the mix on top of the slices and add the blended pistachio on top of the mix.
